Why is it called Electricity?

The Greeks first discovered electricity about 3000 years ago. Its name came from the word “elektron”, which means amber. Amber is the yellow, fossilised rock you find in tree sap. The Greeks found that if they rubbed amber against wool, lightweight objects (such as straw or feathers) would stick to it.

Important Facts about Electricity:

Electricity facts and figures;

  • Electricity travels at the speed of light, about 300,000 kilometres per second.
  • A spark of static electricity can measure up to 3,000 volts.
  • The average taser emits 50,000 volts.
  • A bolt of lightning can measure up to three million (3,000,000) volts (and lasts less than one second).

Do we need Electricity?

We need electricity so all our computers, refrigeratos, televisions and all the electric objects will work. We need it because there is not other way to make the objects work. They need energy and we only know we can make them work with electricity.

Electricity and its Types:

Electricity is a concept that many are unfamiliar with. There are two main types of electricity, Static Electricity, generated by rubbing two or more objects causing to build up friction, Current Electricity, generated by the flow of electrical charge through a conductor across an electrical field.

We need electricity so all our computers, refrigeratos, televisions and all the electric objects will work. We need it because there is not other way to make the objects work. They need energy and we only know we can make them work with electricity.

Electricitye technology we use every day. If you plan on trying to live without electricity, you will no longer be able to turn on the central heating in your

home, use the toilet, preserve food in your fridge/freezer or have clean running water.

Well you know this that your first custom of the day after waking up is to head towards the bathroom to brush your teeth, and have a shower. You experienced a chill when cold water hit you; you realized there is only cold water available. The geyser was not working as there was no electricity. Feeling refreshed and revitalized after a cold shower, You headed towards the frost free refrigerator for a snack, only to discover that the food in the refrigerator was warm and had been turned into something new. Refrigerators play an important role in food preservation, but without electricity they are useless. Surely a nice, hot cup of coffee would help me forget the ordeal that I was going through till now. So you ran to the coffee vending machine to have a cup of hot coffee, but realized that without electricity the coffee machine was anything but useful. Your hopes of having coffee seemed more like a dream. Reading the Sunday newspapers you realized that there would be no electricity supply for the entire day.

You could not watch your favourite T.V programmes the entire day. The lift in your apartment was not working so you had to trudge up and down nearly becoming breathless. The exercise was helpful no doubt for your fitness! Just when you needed to

send some urgent e-mails on your laptop, it shut down and you could not recharge the same.

Co-incidentally, the gas also finished and neither did the induction cooker nor the microwave would work on account of power supply failure, and so you had to be satisfied with cold lunch. Well! Thank the weather, it was not so hot that day, or else you would have got roasted in the heat. Eventually, power supply was restored in the evening and the

only thing that you could say was what a relief! The incident also helped you appreciate the value of electricity as an essential resource.

It is needless to say that today we are so dependent on electricity that we cannot live without electricity. Right from the time, we get up and till the time we sleep and even after that, we are using electricity nonstop. Our life comes to halt in case of power failure. In our country, we still find few villages where electricity has not reached yet, but people there are still living their lives comfortably. They have found out their own way. However, places, where people are used to electricity, cannot be imagined without it.

In the end I, would definitely say this, Electricity is a resource that comes with a cost. It is generated through water and wind. We should value it as a resource that has to be used carefully and wisely.
