Ottal Vasavan Death News; ‘Ottal’ fame Vasavan passes away

Mollywood director Jayaraj’s directorial film ‘Ottal’ fame Vasavan passed away on Thursday. He was 76.
Vasavan was undergoing medical treatment at Kottayam Medical College Hospital due to high blood pressure. He is survived by his wife Rajamma and his two kids Shaji Lal and Sheeba.

Vasavan, popularly known as Kumarakom Vasudevan, was a fisherman in real life and the director Jayaraj selected him for the film ‘Ottal’ while Vasudevan was catching fish at Vembanad lake, Kumarakom. ‘Ottal’ won the national award for the best environmental film.

‘Ottal’ tells the story of a young boy named Kuttappai and his relationship with his grandfather Vallyappachayi. Vasavan played the grandfather character Vallyappachayi in the film which was released in the year 2015. The character Kuttappai was played by the child actor Master Ashanth K Sha.

Helmed by the director Jayaraj, the story of ‘Ottal’ was written by Joshy Mangalath based on the Russian playwright and short story writer Anton Chekhov’s renowned short story ‘Vanka’. The cinematography of ‘Ottal’ was done by MJ Radhakrishnan and the editing by B Ajithkumar. Actor Shine Tom Chacko also played a prominent role in ‘Ottal’ as the character Mesthri. The film also comprised other actors such as Thomas J Kannampuzha, Sabitha Jayaraj, Master Hafis Muhammed, and Vavachan.

‘Ottal’ also won the ‘The Best Children’s Film’ award at the Berlin International Film Festival held in 2016.

Vasudevan has also played prominent roles in the films ‘Bhayanakam’, and ‘Oru Kattil Oru Paykappal’ which were directed by Jayaraj and P Vijayakumar respectively.
