MUMBAI: In a major safety lapse, loco pilot of a train no 11139 CSMT-Gadag Express jumped the red signal and collided with another long-distance train but there were no casualties or injuries to any of the passengers in the incident which happened between Dadar-Matunga on Central Railway (CR) on Friday evening.
A total of three coaches of 11005 Dadar-Puducherry express derailed after Gadag express collided into it around 9.45 pm.
CR’s chief public relations officer Shivaji Sutar said, “It is a case of Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD) as the the train which has been given red signal jumped it and collided into another train.”
In Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD) incident, the loco pilot forgets to halt the train despite the red signal. The standard procedure for a SPAD is to detrain the driver, conduct his blood test to ascertain whether he is under the influence of alcohol or drugs and to question him about the cause.
Dadar-Puducherry express departs from Dadar’s platform number 7 at 9.30 pm. The train, after leaving the platform, criss-crosses tracks to enter Kalyan-bound fast track.
A official said, “The Puducherry express was about to enter the Kalyan-bound fast track when Gadag express jumped the red signal and hit the middle coaches of this train. Fortunately, both trains were at a bare minimum speed hence the impact of collision was minimal and thus it did it cause any injuries or casualties.”
Two coaches, S1 and S2, were hit.
The Gadag express was supposed to wait for the green signal before moving forward on Kalyan-bound track.
Pratik Karve passenger of Chalulkya express said, “We did not feel any impact but only a slight jerk. At first, we thought the brakes had been applied but later came to know that there was an accident.”
Passengers of both the trains were asked to alight. Many passenger sat on the platform while others took road transport.
The trains services on both, up and down, fast lines were suspended because of this incident till midnight.
CR has ordered a inquiry into the accident.
