Have you ever wanted to create vector graphics? If yes, then you should definitely try out Adobe Illustrator. This software allows you to draw shapes and edit them using vectors. In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to create a simple vector graphic in Adobe Illustrator.
Adobe Illustrator is a powerful tool for creating vector graphics. It has become the standard for designing logos, icons, illustrations, and other types of vector artwork.
Vector artworks are scalable, meaning they can be enlarged or reduced without losing quality. They also retain their original shape even after being scaled down. Vector images are ideal for web design because they look great at any size.
Raster images
Raster images are a popular format for storing and displaying digital data. A raster image is an array of pixels, each pixel having one or more color values associated with it.
The number of colors in the array depends on how many bits are used to represent the color value(s) for that pixel. For example, if four bits are used to represent each pixel’s color, then there can be up to 16 different colors represented by the pixel array.
The most common form of raster image is a bitmap (also known as a “bitmapped” image). In a bitmap, each pixel has only two possible states: black or white. Thus, the color value for each pixel is stored as a single binary digit (i.e., 1 or 0).
The advantage of a bitmap over a vector image is its ability to store large amounts of information. For example, a typical bitmap image file may contain thousands of pixels. On the other hand, vector images do not lose resolution when they are zoomed-in or stretched.
In addition to this, vector images are much faster than bitmaps. Since vector images use mathematical formulas to define their shapes rather than physical pixels, they scale well. Also, unlike bitmaps, vector images don’t need to be redrawn every time they’re resized.
However, vector images cannot be edited like bitmaps. You can change the position of a point, line, or curve, but you cannot resize the lines or curves. As such, vector images are best suited for static designs.
Choose an image to convert
when you are looking to convert a raster image to a vector in adobe illustrator, there is an option in the menu bar called “convert to paths”.
If you do not see this option, go to the file menu and select “preferences”. Then look for the tab that says “advanced preferences”. Under that tab, you will find a section called “Conversion”. In that section, click on the button next to “Convert to Paths”.
In Illustrator:
Select your image (or multiple images)
Click on the drop-down arrow next to “Place”
Choose “Create from Clipboard”
Click OK
You will now see a new window open where you can choose the type of path you want to make.
For example, if you chose “create a rectangle”, you would see a box appear around your selection. Now you can drag the corners of the box to adjust the shape of the rectangle.
Once you are satisfied with the shape, simply click on the “OK” button to finalise the conversion process.
Now you can save your converted image as a.AI file.
Note: This method works for both bitmap and vector images.
Categories Of Presets
When converting an image into a vector artwork, you have the option of choosing between several different types of presets. These presets help you create a specific kind of vector artwork.
To start off, you must first choose the type of preset you want to use. There are three main categories of presets:
Type
Type presets are designed to produce simple vector graphics. These include rectangles, circles, ellipses, polygons, and freehand drawings.
Shapes
Shapes presets are designed to produce complex vector artwork. These include rounded rectangles, ovals, squares, triangles, hexagons, stars, hearts, and arrows.
Pattern
Pattern presets are designed to produce repeating patterns. These include chevrons, checkerboards, stripes, grids, and waves.
Each category of presets contains many subcategories. Each subcategory includes more specific presets.
For example, the “type” subcategory includes presets for creating letters, logos, symbols, and text. Similarly, the “shapes” subcategory includes preset styles for creating rounded rectangles, ovoid shapes, and so on.
Editing Vector Image
After you convert an image into a vector format, you can easily edit it by clicking on the icon at the bottom right corner of the art board. The editing options available depend on what type of preset was used when you created the vector artwork.
For example, when you create a pattern using the “pattern” preset, you can only edit the pattern itself. However, when you create a vector artwork using the “shape” preset, you get access to all the editing tools.
Save Your Image
The last step is to save your newly created vector artwork. To do this, simply click on the icon at the top right corner of the artboard. You will then be able to choose which file format you want to save your image.
There are two ways to save your image. If you are working on a single image, you can simply export it as a.SVG file. If you are working with multiple files, you can either export them individually or combine them together into one file.
Conclusion
Vector artwork has become increasingly popular over the past few years. It is often preferred because it allows you to scale your artwork without losing quality.
However, before you begin designing your own vector artwork, you need to understand how to design a vector artwork from scratch. In this article, we discussed some of the basics of designing a vector artwork. We also shared some tips on how to convert an image into a.AI file. Finally, we explained how to edit a vector artwork after it is saved.
