Writing straight away means letting yourself go to the flow of thoughts and words, relying on intuition, and entering that silent space from which creativity arises. This is a concept that is often contrasted with the idea of writing planning. In part this is true but, as we will see in the course of the article, writing and organizing do not necessarily have to be mutually exclusive.
The advantage of instinctive writing (or jet writing ) is that it allows us to draw directly from our intuition. Thanks to it, we can overcome the structures of the mind with which we normally classify reality and our experience, and express ourselves with truer, heartfelt, concrete words.
Some types of text are best suited to this method, while others require more structuring of the content. I am referring to those texts that serve to inform or communicate a precise message, such as a corporate White Paper, a newspaper article, or a written report that requires precise organization.
Writing straight away, therefore, lends itself well to those situations in which it is not necessary to plan the contents meticulously. However, even where some preparation is needed, it can be used to roughly sketch the information, and then intervene by giving the whole a functional and coherent structure. That’s not all. Certain texts – let’s think of a novel – while providing a specific plot, require a certain amount of spontaneity on the part of the author in defining the details of the story, details that often unfold naturally during writing, without having been established a priori.
Jet writing is also intimately linked to the concepts of conscious writing, expressive writing, and writing therapeutic. Here we leave the strictly professional sphere and talk about the possibility of using writing to connect with the deepest part of ourselves, get to know each other better, metabolize traumas and fears. Writing that, in all respects, is comparable to a meditative practice. It is a dynamic that I know very well as, alongside my consulting activity, I work as a facilitator in the field of expressive and conscious writing.

The power of profound intuition: why writing straight away is useful
I speak of profound intuition because writing in a flash draws from there, from intuition. Even if we often ignore it we do not forget that in each of us there is a part that already knows all the answers to our questions, even before the mind has reasoned about it. Writing straight away allows you to connect to this part of our being, opening the doors to intuition.
By letting the flow of thoughts and words flow, we will find our voice, our style of writing. This happens because it will be our true self that speaks. Not the superstructures, blocks, and self-censorships that we have built over the years or that we have inherited from others.
Of course, not all types of text benefit in the same way from writing straight away. So here are some situations in which this technique is particularly useful.
Write straight away without organizing your content
This is a particularly debated issue among those involved in writing, whether it is writing a short story or a corporate blog article: it is better to write at your fingertips, without upstream planning, or to follow a structure precise?
We assume that everyone has their writing method: each develops the system that suits him best, the important thing is that it is functional for the purpose. Having said that, in my opinion, writing straight away can be useful when we are dealing with a text that does not require meticulous planning.
Let’s take the example of a freelance Copywriter who has to write a text for a client. A persuasive, engaging text that sells. Such content will need a structure: the aim is to communicate a message to the reader and invite him to take a certain action.
This does not mean, however, that we must give up intuition. The professional could start by writing the concepts he wants to insert in one go and then intervene, at a later time, to structure the contents and adequately draft them.
Even those who deal with the texts of a Blog can make use of writing straight away. There are, in fact, two types of posts: opinion articles, where the author expresses his or her point of view or experience concerning a certain topic, and more technical articles, such as tutorials. In the first case, writing straight away is certainly practicable – indeed, highly advisable – because it allows you to effectively express thoughts and emotions. Technical articles, on the other hand, require well-defined planning.
Even the writing of a novel, if we think about it, involves a “hybrid” approach. Although starting from a lineup that indicates the contents of the chapters when the author writes the scenes he also relies on the spontaneity of the moment: this does not mean upsetting the plot, but that the specific details, for example, the dialogues, emerge in the phase of writing, letting oneself be guided by creativity.
Write straight away to know your emotions
Writing straight away has an important value even outside the professional context: precisely because it allows us to access our deepest part writing is good.
Here we enter the field of expressive writing and therapeutic writing, techniques that I know very well and that I have been practicing for years to help those who need to recover their psycho-physical balance.
Expressive writing is a form of writing that allows you to give shape, form the scene and the emotions you feel toward a happened that hurts. It consists in writing freely what you feel intending to observe those moods without judgment, distancing yourself from them, and learning to live with them.
Writing, in fact, by connecting us with our true self, has a therapeutic value: it brings out emotions that would otherwise remain hidden, creating discomfort and somatizations. Starting to write is therefore beneficial, especially if you practice handwriting.
Jet writing and awareness: what is the link?
The above allows me to introduce the concept of conscious writing. What is it about? When we talk about awareness we mean the ability to stay in the present. Conscious writing, therefore, means writing being in the here and now, letting the flow of thoughts that appear to the mind flow. Following this reasoning, we can understand that writing straight away is a direct consequence of this approach which makes writing a form of meditation.
Hence, jet writing can be used within a path of therapeutic conscious writing, especially when the person has a traumatic experience to be externalized or some form of inner censorship from which he must free himself. In fact, in each of us, there lives a sort of “judge” who always tries to give indications and directives. In some cases, however, it is too uncompromising and, instead of helping us, it ends up blocking our spontaneity: thanks to conscious writing we can silence it because writing is a tool for personal growth.
Writing straight away: pros and cons
There are no pros and cons to writing straight away. It all depends on the type of text we have to develop and the objectives we want to pursue: based on this, we will understand if and how to use this form of writing.
Let’s go back to the difference between opinion articles and technical articles. If in the first case we can rely on spontaneity, without necessarily planning the article in detail (then it always depends on the habits of the author), in the second case we will need a precise lineup and a study upstream of the arguments.
For example, when I am asked to write a loan opinion article, I write the first draft straight away and then I optimize it rationally.
At the same time, we have seen that the structure does not exclude writing straight away: being both functional to the success of the text, they often represent different phases of the same work. In any case, (both when we write straight away and when we follow a precise structure) the advice is to leave the revision at the end: when we write the first draft, let’s not stop constantly to correct errors, commas, and words, because in this way we slow down the flow of work.
How to create a story without starting from a predefined structure
Many wonder how it is possible to create a story without starting from a precise structure. The system exists and is called the “explosion” method. This system is based on writing straight away and, in a way, is similar to the method suggested for the Copywriter who has to write a text.
Suppose we have to invent a story from scratch. Let’s see what are the steps to follow according to the aforementioned technique:
- On the first day, we will write a sentence, straight away. The sentence, for example, could be: “I want to tell the story of two friends who, one day, are confronted with a mystery”.
- Let’s pick up the sentence the next day, reread it, and add some details, for example: “I want to tell the story of two friends who, one day, are confronted with a mystery greater than them. Their names are Gianluca and Francesca: he is a great painter and she is a restorer ”.
- Let’s go on like this: every day we add extra detail to the narration until the opening sentence becomes a long text about a page of Word.
We then created the subject of a hypothetical novel: if it works, we create the structure chapter by chapter.
As we can see, the organization is always there, because even a fictional product like a novel requires planning. However, this does not rule out writing straight away, which is needed both at the time of story creation and during the actual writing.
