NEW DELHI: With Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot issuing a video appeal in favour of Mallikarjun Kharge in the upcoming Congress presidential election, underdog Shashi Tharoor has alleged violation of code of conduct and shot off a complaint to the party’s poll authority.
Sources said Tharoor has taken objection to Gehlot’s video appeal in which he has extolled the virtues and experience of Kharge and sought votes in his favour. In a letter to AICC poll authority chairman Madhusudan Mistry, Tharoor is said to have questioned how could Gehlot, as leader of legislature party in Rajasthan, turn partisan in the internal polls. Tharoor is learnt to have underlined that Gehlot’s appeal is in contravention of the guidelines issued by Mistry. In response, Mistry said, “We are looking into the incident, as to what can be done.”
On October 3, Mistry issued detailed ‘do’s and don’ts’, barring organisational post holders from campaigning for any of the candidates.
While Tharoor has been complaining that the level playing field was being skewed by open appeals of some leaders, his targeting of Gehlot’s video is significant, as the CM has a commanding hold over his state’s delegates who form the electoral college of the AICC polls. He is also one of the proposers of Kharge in the nomination papers. Earlier, Gehlot had called Tharoor an “elite” candidate, while pitching for Kharge.
Interestingly, on his campaign tour to MP on Friday, he was received by state Congress chief Kamal Nath and legislature party leader Govind Singh. He called it a “first” in a sarcastic jibe, even as he thanked them for welcoming him.
