NEW DELHI: Five electoral trusts together disbursed 72% of their total contributions of over Rs 481 crore to BJP in 2021-22, while Congress received a mere 3.8% share of this pie.
Of the Rs 481 crore contributions declared by the five in their latest reports to the Election Commission, Prudent Electoral Trust led with disbursals worth Rs 464.8 crore to eight parties, including Rs 336.5 crore to BJP and Rs 18.4 crore to Congress.
In 2020-21, seven electoral trusts had together disbursed donations worth Rs 258.4 crore, of which BJP received Rs 212.5 crore (82%) and Congress Rs 5.4 crore (2.1%)
Eight of the 13 electoral trusts that have filed their reports for 2021-22 have shown ‘nil’ contributions.
BJP received Rs 346.5 crore from Prudent and A B General Electoral Trust in 2021-22, even as Congress was way behind with its receipts from two trusts – Prudent and Small Donations Electoral Trust – totalling just Rs 18.4 crore.
In contrast to Congress, regional parties reported far richer contributions. While AAP, which is in office in Delhi and Punjab, received Rs 21.1 crore, including Rs 16.3 crore from Prudent Electoral Trust and Rs 4.8 crore from Independent Electoral Trust; TRS received Rs 40 crore from Prudent; Samajwadi Party Rs 27 crore from Prudent; YSR Congress Party Rs 20 crore from Prudent; Shiromani Akali Dal Rs 7 crore from Prudent; Punjab Lok Congress Rs 1 crore from Prudent; Goa Forward Party Rs 50 lakh from Prudent; and DMK Rs 50 lakh from Chennai-based Triumph Electoral Trust.
Prudent – which received donations from corporates like the Bharti Airtel group, Arcelor Mittal group, GMR group, DLF, Torrent Power and Serum Institute – contributed the largest amount (Rs 464.8 crore) among the largest number of parties (eight) – BJP, Congress, AAP, TRS, SP, YRS Congress, Shiromani Akali Dal and Punjab Lok Congress – in 2021-22. A B General Electoral Trust disbursed a total Rs 10 crore, all of which went to BJP. Delhi-based Independent Electoral Trust contributed all its donations worth Rs 4.8 crore to AAP, which also received Rs 16.3 crore from Prudent Electoral Trust.
Small Donations Electoral Trust routed all its contributions – totalling Rs 4.8 crore – to Congress, while Triumph Electoral Trust disbursed its Rs 50 lakh to DMK.
In 2020-21, BJP had received Rs 209 crore from Prudent, Rs 2 crore from Jayabharath Electoral Trust, Rs 1 crore from Samaj Electoral Trust and Rs 5 lakh from Einzigartig Electoral Trust Prudent. Congress, on the other hand, had received Rs 5.4 crore, of which Rs 2 crore came from Prudent, Rs 3.3 crore from Small Donations Electoral Trust and Rs 12 lakh from Janpragati Electoral Trust.
