SHIMLA: The ruling BJP and the opposition Congress have not achieved the desired success in pacifying rebels contesting as independent candidates while Saturday is the last date for the withdrawal of candidatures.
Presence of rebels from both parties on over a dozen seats each has created troubles for both the parties in the assembly elections polling for which would be held on November 12.
Senior leaders from both parties are camping in Shimla and are persuading the dissidents and the actual picture of having contained the rebellion by both the parties will be clear only by Saturday evening.
Rebellion in BJP and Congress has left the top leadership of these parties worried. While rebels can topple the BJP’s plan to change the “riwaz” (trend) of not repeating the government in Himachal Pradesh, it could also blow away the plan of Congress to continue with the “riwaz” of changing the government every five years.
BJP is facing rebellion on Barsar, Kangra, Dharamshala, Chamba, Indora, Fatehpur, Banjar, Mandi Sadar, Jhanduta, Bilaspur, Nalagarh, Kinnaur and few other seats. Earlier, former MP and former state president Maheshwar Singh was also contesting as independent from Kullu seat but after holding a meeting with BJP state president J P Nadda and getting assurance from him now he has decided not to contest. Interestingly, his son Hiteshwar Singh is still in the fray as rebel candidate in Banjar seat.
The Congress is currently facing direct rebellions in Chopal, Theog, Pachhad, Arki, Indora, Anni, Jogindernagar, Nachan, Jhanduta, Bilaspur, Hamirpur Sadar and Chintpurni assembly seats. Top Congress leaders have also come to the field to persuade the rebels. AICC in-charge for state Rajeev Shukla is camping in Shimla. On Thursday, he took feedback from all the leaders of the state about the seats facing rebellion.
All the leaders whose tickets have been cut in these seats have filed their nomination as independents. Sources said that despite the requests of top Congress leadership, the rebels on Chopal, Theog, Arki and Pachhad seats are not ready to withdraw their nominations.
Both parties are making last minute efforts to persuade the rebels to withdraw their candidatures and now all eyes are set for Saturday to see whether the majority of rebels listen to the party leadership of continue with their decision to contest as independents.
