It is critical for each of us to do our part in order to keep as much material out of the landfill as possible. The 3 Rs of waste management — Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle — are one approach to put that plan into action.

- Reduce refers to reducing the quantity of waste we produce.
- Finding new uses for items that would otherwise be discarded is what reuse is all about.
- Recycling is the process of transforming something old and useless (such as plastic milk bottles) into something new and valuable (like picnic benches, playground equipment and recycling bins).
Reduce:
Simply put, reducing means producing less garbage. The first of the three Rs is the best strategy for keeping the environment clean. By decreasing, you are able to eliminate the source of the problem. Making less garbage in the first place means there will be less rubbish to clean up afterwards. Here are some simple techniques to cut down on your waste output:
Lunch should be packed in a lunchbox. Paper and plastic bags generate a lot of garbage, and it takes hundreds of years for plastic bags to disintegrate. Instead, use a reusable lunch bag or a sturdy lunchbox. The same goes for the contents of your lunchbox. Use reusable containers instead of plastic baggies.
To the grocery shop, bring reusable bags. The majority of retailers sell reusable canvas or sturdy plastic shopping bags. When you BYOB — bring your own bags — some grocery stores will even give you a discount at the checkstand. Refrain from buying bottled water. Use a reusable water container instead of buying bottled water.
Reuse
Reusing is the process of repurposing outdated or unwanted goods that would otherwise be discarded. You can reuse products in a variety of ways to help reduce your trash output:
Organize your closet. It’s possible that your size has changed. Perhaps your preferences have shifted. Instead of tossing out clothes you no longer want, give them to someone who would appreciate them. Give the clothes to a friend with a young child if you have a box of toddler clothes and your “baby” is already in grade school. You can also donate your clothes to a variety of charitable organisations – they will find a good home for your items, and you will receive a tax benefit.
Find a new application for an old object. When it’s time to get rid of something, consider what else you could do with it. For example, glass jars can be used as storage in your creating area or shop. Cut up old bath towels and use them as wash rags.
Set up a garage sale. You know that dining room set, workout equipment, trinkets, blender, and other items around the house that you don’t use anymore? A garage sale is an excellent way to declutter your home while also assisting in the reuse of unwanted items. You can also make some money. When the sale is over, box up everything that didn’t sell and donate the rest to a local charity; many will come to your house to pick it up.
Recycle
The final — and most often used — of the three Rs is recycling. Recycling is the process of converting waste materials into new products in order to reduce the use of virgin resources.
Paper bags, paperboard (such as soap, cereal, tissue, and shoe boxes), fresh cardboard, and even the squiggly middle part of corrugated cardboard are all made from recycled corrugated cardboard.
Newspaper is one of the simplest and most widely recycled materials. Egg cartons, building insulation, paper plates, kitten litter, construction paper, phone books, sheetrock, and new newspapers are all made from yesterday’s news.
