NEW DELHI: Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge‘s remarks on Wednesday “Bakrid mein bachenge toh Muharram mein nachenge” to evade a direct reply on who will be the party’s PM face in 2024 Lok Sabha elections evoked a strong reaction from the BJP.
Reacting to his remarks, the BJP called it “highly insulting to Muslims”.
Kharge, who is contesting the Congress presidential elections and is tipped to win the race to the top post, was in Bhopal today for campaigning. When asked by reporters if he or Rahul Gandhi will be the party’s PM face in 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Kharge tried to wriggle out using the analogy “Bakrid mein bachenge toh Muharram mein nachenge”.
Elaborating on his remark, the Congress veteran, who is believed to have the backing of the Gandhis, said: “I am contesting the organisational election. First, let these elections get over and let me become president, then we will see.”
However, the BJP took offence to his remarks and said it was insulting for the Muslims as Muharram was not the month of celebrations.
BJP national spokesperson Shehjad Poonawala tweeted an angry retort to Kharge’s remark.
“Muslims across the world do not celebrate Muharram, it is not a month of celebration but a month of sorrow. To say that there will be naach gaana in Muharram is extremely objectionable,” he said in a video tweet.
The BJP leader described Kharge as the chosen proxy of the Congress’s first family (meaning the Gandhis).

The BJP leader added that Kharge’s remarks reflected the poor state of the Congress as a party and should also come as an eyeopener to the Gandhis.
80-year-old Kharge is pitted against Shashi Tharoor for the October 17 party elections, the results of which will be declared on October 19.
