Ukrainian officials have said recent Russian airstrikes knocked out nearly one-third of the country’s electricity-generating power stations and damaged some of the country’s crucial central-heating systems.
Those systems use a collection of plants that mostly burn natural gas to heat up water, which is then pumped through citywide piping networks. The hot water heats almost half of all Ukraine’s buildings. The damage makes cities including Kyiv vulnerable to not only blackouts, but also extended periods without heat.
