BAREILLY: With prices of lemons skyrocketing, they have become a lucrative target for thieves in Uttar Pradesh, so much so that over 100kg of lemons were stolen in two separate incidents in Shahjahanpur and Bareilly districts. At present, lemons are being sold at prices upwards of Rs 250 per kg.
The first incident of lemon theft was reported on Sunday night from Shahjahanpur, where thieves targeted a warehouse in Bajariya vegetable market and allegedly stole 60kg lemons. They also took away 40kg onions and 38kg garlic from the warehouse, which comes under jurisdiction of Tilhar police station.
An FIR has been registered under section 380 (theft in dwelling house or godown) of the IPC. Search was ongoing to nab the accused, SHO, Tilhar police station said.
The second incident was reported from Delapeer vegetable market where a robber allegedly fled with 50kg lemons worth Rs 10,000. Police said they are searching for the accused with the help of CCTV footage from the nearby shops.
Meanwhile, following the theft incidents, many shopkeepers said they are now preferring to store lemons in their homes rather than keeping them in the shops. Rajeev Rathore, a vegetable seller in Shahajahanpur, said, “I had purchased lemons in bulk as I knew that the prices will shoot up but never expected that thieves will start targeting them. With the rise in thefts, I am now keeping the lemon stock in my house and taking only a limited amount to the shop to sell.”
