NEW DELHI: Uttar Pradesh police on Wednesday arrested Mahant Bajrang Muni in connection with a viral video clip in which he purportedly made provocative comments and allegedly issued “rape threats” to Muslim women. SP Sitapur, RP Singh confirmed the arrest.
The FIR against Bajrang Muni Das was lodged on charges of “sexual harassment through words, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman, uttering words with deliberate intent to hurt the religious feelings of any person.”
He is the ‘mahant’ of the Maharshi Shri Lakshman Das Udaseen Ashram in Khairabad town in Sitapur, and had been involved in controversial speeches in the past as well.
The National Commission for Women (NCW) took cognizance of the speech delivered in UP’s Sitapur on April 2.
The opposition too tried to corner the Adityanath government on the issue, with Samajwadi Party tweeting “When will the bulldozer run on the accused? The CM should tell.”
The post was followed by another tweet by SP president Akhilesh Yadav in which he asked CM Yogi Adityanath to act against the criminals hiding behind the saint’s robe.
