NEW DELHI: If you have an iPhone and want to latch on to a 5G network in cities where the high-speed service is available, be prepared to wait till December. For Samsung, while 5G may be enabled in some of the top devices such as the Fold4, Galaxy S22 and A33, the entire ecosystem will be enabled only by mid-November.
Chinese brands are ahead currently – Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo. These have enabled 5G on most of their compatible devices, or are sending software updates that help upgrade them over the air (OTA). Concerned over the slow 5G rollout, the government on Wednesday held a high-level meeting with representatives of telcos, apart from top smartphone makers.
The government, which was represented by top officials from the telecom and IT & electronics ministries, wanted to find out the reasons that were leading to delays in 5G consumer services, despite companies such as Airtel announcing the launch across eight cities on October 1 at the India Mobile Congress where PM Narendra Modi was also present.
Apple said, “We are working with our carrier partners in India to bring the best 5G experience to iPhone users as soon as network validation and testing for quality and performance is completed. 5G will be enabled via a software update and will start rolling out to iPhone users in December.” Samsung also said that work is on for network testing and validation before all the 5G models are enabled.
