GREATER NOIDA: India’s wealthiest self-made woman entrepreneur had an inspiring message for Bennett University‘s Class of 2022 on Saturday. “As an entrepreneur, I am constantly learning, be it about technology, developing innovation in retail or understanding consumer insights. Curiosity will always give you an edge because learning is integral to growth. Whether it’s a road less travelled or not, take the path you want to take. As you graduate today, remember to shine the spotlight on yourself and introspect often, course correct when needed and never stop believing in yourself,” said Falguni Nayar, founder and CEO of Nykaa.
Nayar was speaking at the fourth convocation of Bennett University, where she was conferred with a Doctor of Philosophy (Honoris Causa) in the field of Business for her exemplary accomplishments.
A total of 709 students – 11 PhD, 54 post graduate, 628 undergraduate and 16 post graduate diploma – received their degrees. The ceremony was presided over in virtual mode by Uttar Pradesh governor Anandiben Patel, while actor Ranveer Singh was the guest of honour.
In a video message, the governor said: “I wish all the students, parents and teachers all the best for the 4th convocation ceremony. The university has come up in great shape. It is a proud moment for students who have graduated from this renowned university.”
Ranveer Singh, who received a rapturous response from the students and interacted with them after the ceremony, said, “Success is the magnitude of the beneficial footprint that you leave on society.” He told students, “Always be honest in your dealings, don’t wrong anyone, don’t get corrupted. Be grateful for everything you’ve been blessed with. Believe in yourself. Focus your time and your energy on being productive and positive. Chase excellence, not success.” He also cautioned students that social media is not real life and urged them not to get obsessed with “cheap validation”.
Bennett University chancellor Vineet Jain‘s advice to the Class of 2022 was, “Forget the standard definitions of ‘success’ and seek out what gives you meaning. If you find this ‘why’ of your life, you can deal with the ‘hows’ and ‘whats’. It’s important that you follow your own instincts and interests.”
“Many of us are stuck in jobs we don’t like. That’s because we often do what our peers or family or society expect of us. Instead, find the kind of work that you’re good at, and which gives you joy and satisfaction. It could be a salaried job, or it could be a start-up of your own. Once you do that, even an 18-hour day will feel like fun, not hard work,” Jain said.
He said the conferment of an Honoris Causa on Nayar was a recognition “of not one, but two deeply heart-warming trends – the rise of Indian entrepreneurship and the growth of women’s empowerment”.
Jain and Singh also felicitated 15 students from Ucchya Prathmik Vidyalaya, Kasna, and handed over gift baskets and bags with books to them.
Palak Devashish Vakil was awarded the chancellor’s gold medal for overall star performance, including academic excellence. Four chancellor’s silver medals were awarded to Jai Chhabra (cultural activities), Avishka Sharma (best all-round student), Mane Pradyumn Bhagwan (innovation & entrepreneurship) and Aviral Madan (sports). Fourteen vice chancellor’s gold medals were also awarded to the batch toppers of the respective programmes.
In his annual report on the university, vice chancellor Prabhu Kumar Aggarwal said BU has grown from strength to strength over the past six years, from a starting batch of 200 students to close to 5,500 students as “we commence the new academic year… Our program offerings have also grown in line, from four degree programs at inception to 29”.
