MUMBAI: The ministry of external affairs has said it is keeping a close eye on the case of two Indian nationals who have gone missing in Kenya from July.
Bandra resident Zulfiqar Ahmad Khan, former vice-president of Star TV and former COO of Balaji Telefilms, and one Zaid Sami Kidwai, along with their local driver Nicodemus Mwania have been missing in Kenya for 85 days. A police complaint was filed locally. Zaid’s wife moved court on July 28.
MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said in Delhi on Friday, “A habeas corpus petition was filed in a Kenyan court. The issue is now sub-judice in the high court of Kenya. A number of hearings have taken place. Our high commission has been in continuous touch with the Kenyan authorities. We are also in touch with some family members. We are keeping a close eye. I am afraid they are still missing.” Khan’s lawyer in Kenya has blamed state police for his abduction.
His family in Mumbai has sought PM Modi’s intervention to find and repatriate him. A friend who declined to be named said Khan’s sisters in the city were “in no condition to speak.” “We don’t know who Zaid is but we are told he is Zulfiqar’s friend,” he said.
Khan resigned his job in Mumbai in May and went on a trip to Kenya in July. He posted travel updates, including the last from the Masai Mara safari, on his social media account. He was due to return on July 24, but his family lost contact with him from July 21. The three were reportedly last seen at a nightclub in Westlands, Nairobi, on the night of July 23. They were “driven away in an unmarked car.” The vehicle was allegedly found with all doors open and the engine still running.
Khan’s media colleagues have launched a campaign to trace him. As per Kenyan media reports, Khan and Kidwai were in the country to join President William Ruto’s election campaign Information and Communications Technology team.
“The abduction could be a fallout of their contribution in the field of information and technology to Ruto’s re-election campaign,” ‘The Star’ reported. Ruto won the poll subsequently.
