GHAZIABAD: The son of a retired Delhi Police inspector was battered to death with brick blows to the head outside an eatery in Ghaziabad after two groups clashed in what witnesses described as “extreme drunken rage” over the way two cars were parked on Tuesday night.
Police said Arun Singh, 35, had gone to a dhaba on Loni road at Tila Mor with two of his friends — Deepak (32) and Sanjay Rawat (33) — the day after Diwali.
After dinner, Arun could not get into his Santro outside the restaurant as another car was parked so close that it blocked the door. Arun is believed to have gone back to ask about the owner of the car, leading to a heated exchange, which began with expletives and escalated quickly outside the eatery. Before anyone knew it, a man picked up a brick lying on the road and repeatedly smashed it on Arun’s head.

Police said they have identified one of the accused, a resident of Loni, who is on the run. They are investigating how many others are involved. Horrifying visuals of the brawl captured by a passerby show the attacker, in a yellow T-shirt and shorts, standing over Arun and hitting him, the two parked cars just in front of them. Arun is seen lying motionless on the ground. Police could not confirm if this man was the owner of the car parked next to Arun’s.
During the incident, Arun’s friends allegedly hid in a corner and didn’t intervene. Arun’s family has named Deepak and Sanjay in their complaint, accusing them of fleeing the crime scene and not helping take Arun to a hospital. Police said both have been detained.
SP (city-2) Gyanendra Singh told TOI they were informed about the incident around 9.15pm on Tuesday. Cops reached the spot along with the family, and took Arun to Delhi’s GTB Hospital, where he was declared dead. Tila Mor is near the Delhi border.
The SP said Arun was the son of Kanwarpal Singh, who retired as an inspector from the Delhi Police in March 2021. The family lives in Jawali village of Ghaziabad. “Initial investigation has found that Arun had gone with his two friends to the Jagdamba & Bihari dhaba near Hobs Kitchen. After their meal, when Arun and his friends were leaving, they saw that another vehicle was parked adjacent to their Santro and they couldn’t open the door. Arun called the car’s owner with the help of an eatery staff and that triggered an argument. Soon a fight began, after which the accused took a brick and smashed it on Arun’s head,” the SP said.
An eyewitness said he was working at the dhaba when the staff heard an argument and rushed out. “We saw some men fighting. Some of them vandalised the car of the man being attacked with bricks. One of the men smashed a brick on the victim’s head. After that, they fled in their car,” the dhaba worker, who asked not be named, said.
Another worker said both groups were drunk, and the brawl started after one of them abused the other. “Everyone was drunk… Later, they started fighting with each other,” he said.
Arun’s father Kanwarpal told TOI he received a call from Deepak around 9pm. “When my younger brother and other family members reached the spot, my son was lying in a pool of blood on the road. His friends weren’t there; neither did they take him to a hospital. We suspect their role in the case and that’s why we’ve filed a complaint against them as well,” Kanwarpal said.
Police said they have registered an FIR against Deepak, Sanjay and unidentified accused under sections 302 (murder) and 427 (mischief causing damage) of the IPC. “We raided an accused’s house in the city, but he is absconding,” said Bhuvneshwar Kumar, SHO of Tila Mor police station.
“We have detained Deepak and Sanjay. Five teams have been formed to identify the other accused and nab them,” the SP said, adding that the autopsy report is awaited.
