Hand quilting is a traditional method of using a needle and thread to sew the layers of a quilt (top, batting, and back) together by hand. The quilter secures the layers for quilting by holding the quilt in her lap or using a hoop or frame.

This method of quilting does not require the use of a sewing machine or a long arm machine. Straight line or decorative quilt designs can be used to enhance the overall design and appeal of the finished quilt. For basic quilting, the quilter uses a running stitch, which entails pushing the needle in and out of all three layers in an even series of stitches.

The quilter can stitch “in the ditch” (near the seams) or follow a design such as cross hatch, feather, stippling, or a marked design made by hand or from a template. The size and length of the stitches are determined by the quilter’s ability as well as the desired effect. Hand quilting can be found in Whole Cloth quilts made in the United States during the 17th century, and it dates back many centuries.

Perle cotton or embroidery thread with larger stitches are used in more modern hand quilting styles. Hand quilting can be done in a variety of ways, from the traditional method with many stitches per inch to the big stitch method with fewer stitches per inch.

Hand Quilting Supplies and Tools

  • A quilt that has been basted and is ready to be quilted!
  • Hand Quitting is done with a specific type of needle known as a between. The size of the “between” depends on the size and type of stitch used by the quilter. The needle sizes range from 5 to 12. The smaller the needle, the higher the number.
  • While the quilter’s choice of thread is entirely up to them, there is a type of quilting thread that is heavier than piecing thread. It is frequently glazed, allowing it to glide effortlessly through all three layers of the quilt. If you’re using a thread that isn’t designed for quilting, beeswax can help with gliding and protecting your thread from abrasion as it passes through the layers.
  • Hoop or Frame- Using a hoop or frame will help you keep your work taut and stitching will be easier. A hoop allows you to take your quilting with you wherever you go. Hoops can be used on stands, on the lap, or on the floor, and they free up your hands for stitching. Quilt frames are usually stationary and less portable, and they allow you to quilt a larger area at once. Hoops and frames come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Hand quilting with a hoop is a great way to get started. Quilt with fabric that is straight and not on the bias. Use a square hoop or frame to increase your quilting space.
  • Thimble- When quilting, a thimble will protect your pushing finger. Quilters can choose from a variety of thimbles, such as metal, plastic, or leather. There are styles that cover your entire finger or leave the area around your finger nail uncovered. There are also adhesive-backed leather or plastic pads that stick to your finger tip to protect it without covering it. A thimble protects your hands while also allowing you to control the length of your stitches. You can experiment with a variety of thimbles before settling on one.
  • Quilting stencils and designs—Acrylic stencils designed to be used with marking tools to transfer designs onto your quilt are available. There are also books available that contain designs ranging from traditional to contemporary. Check your dishes and bowls if you’re quilting simple shapes.
  • Temporary markers, chalk, hera, transfer paper, or painters tape can all be used to transfer quilting designs to the quilt. BEFORE MARKING, ALWAYS TEST YOUR TEMPORARY PRODUCTS. You can follow a specific design by marking your quilt.

What I Wish I’d Known Before I Began Hand Quilting

It cannot be overstated how important it is to remember that not all temporary markers are truly temporary. Many temporary marking pens are available on the market, but they may not be temporary in certain situations, such as when exposed to heat and humidity, water, sunlight, or fabric that has spray starch or sizing on it. If you’re using a hoop, take the quilt out if you’re not going to be quilting for an extended period of time. Do you like the look of HAND QUILTING but don’t have the time to do it? Hand quilting is available as a service!

Hand quilting is a lovely way to finish a quilt, but it takes a long time. Make sure you’re setting realistic goals for yourself!
