NEW DELHI: Telangana’s ruling party Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), now known as Bharat Rashtra Samithi, received almost all of its Rs 193.9 crore worth of contributions for the year 2021-22 through electoral bonds and electoral trusts. While it has declared Rs 153 crore as income from electoral bonds in its latest contribution report filed with the Election Commission, another Rs 40 crore landed in its kitty from the Prudent Electoral Trust.
Other regional parties that have declared income from electoral bonds in their contribution reports for the year 2021-22 are YSR Congress Party (Rs 60 crore or three-fourths of its total contributions of over Rs 80 crore), Shiromani Akali Dal (Rs 50 lakh) and Samajwadi Party (Rs 3.21 lakh). In 2020-21, YSR Congress Party had declared Rs 96.25 crore as its income via electoral bonds route, while SAD and SP reported nil income from bonds. In 2019-20, which was also the general election year, SP had received Rs 10.8 crore via electoral bonds route and TRS, Rs 98.15 crore.
While only three national parties have filed their contribution reports for the year 2021-22 — BSP, which has yet again declared ‘nil’ contributions in excess of Rs 20,000 each; NCP, with total declared contributions of Rs 57.9 crore; and National People’s Party (NPP) with Rs 34.5 lakh — the contribution reports of 16 regional parties for the relevant year can be accessed on the EC website.
Prudent Electoral Trust — one of the largest electoral trusts in India through which a major chunk of corporate donations are routed — has contributed big money to many regional parties in 2021-22. While it gave Rs 60 crore to YSR Congress Party, its contributions to the TRS in the same year totalled Rs 40 crore, to Samajwadi Party, Rs 27 crore (over 80% of its total contributions of Rs 33 crore), and to Shiromani Akali Dal, Rs 7 crore.
NCP, a national party, has not declared any contributions from an electoral trust or from electoral bonds in its 2021-22 contribution report.
SAD declared total contributions worth Rs 13.76 crore in 2021-22, Telugu Desam Party Rs 62.9 lakh, YSR Congress Party Rs 80.01 crore, Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Rs 1.86 crore, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) Rs 1.43 crore, Jannayak Janta Party Rs 13.5 lakh, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha Rs 1 lakh, Rashtriya Lok Dal Rs 50.76 lakh, Kerala Congress Rs 26.62 lakh, Goa Forward Party Rs 25 lakh and All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) Rs 7.3 lakh. BJD, All India Forward Bloc and AIADMK have declared nil contributions in excess of Rs 20,000 in the same year.
